…for the first time, again after reading a 24 Ways tutorial by Chris Coyier.

Why switch from Dreamhost to GitHub?

I've had a Dreamhost account for a long time. I use it to register domains and to host Wordpress and static sites. My personal site was the biggest site on my VPS, which gets ~30,000 pageviews/mth.

For this I was paying Dreamhost $ 120/yr for an account + $30ish/mth for a VPS; ~$480/yr .

Even at that I would receive a weekly email from Dreamhost…

…design friends would ask me a question, and I would...instead of answering it, I would think, "Oh, Chris already wrote about this, so I'll forward on his article," because it was pretty good.

This continued on. Finally, Chris launched a Kickstarter campaign years later, so he's been helping people out and writing articles about CSS for years. He launches a Kickstarter campaign saying, "I'm going to redesign css‑tricks.com, and I want to be able to raise …

This should be enough, but if you want to target other highish-res screens, you can read up on Chris Coyier's Retina Display Media Query post here .

2. Have two versions of your CSS sprites: standard dimensions and @ 2x

Maykel Loomans wrote a very useful post last year on using CSS Sprites to optimize your website for Retina displays .

Loomans recommends having two sprite files, one for standard and one for high-res .

Using the media query I …

Another great of our industry, Chris Coyier. A man, who's spent a lot of his free time just handing out his knowledge he's learnt on a silver platter for everyone to take, said something the other day which I truly agreed with.

As long as I've been blogging, I've had a full-time job. So I'm in the trenches of web design, not just speaking about it from afar. I get to speak from experience, and I think people connect with me for that reason, at least on some …

Github .

If you're interested in other approaches, Chris Coyier did a great round-up a while back on responsive data tables — there are some fascinating approaches in there, but none which met our criteria.

If you have some other ideas to either improve on this approach, or something else we should check out, sound off in the comments. Have fun with this new code, it was fun to work on and hopefully fun for you to use!

…in to sell you more expensive services - to happily letting people steal my friend Chris Coyier's domain , they have long been the supreme douchenozzles of the domain industry.

Now there's an even more important reason to ditch GoDaddy: they're SOPA supporters. They've gone so far as to file a statement with the House of Representatives in support of SOPA . This isn't just douchey; considering they're a tech company whose livelihood …

…BarCamp Tour, do it! He's a great presenter with lots of teach and an entertaining style in which to teach it. You can get a taste of a Chris Coyier presentation at CSS Tricks, where his 101st screencast, Let's Suck at Github Together , walks you through Github with very little pain.

This article also appears in the Shopify Technology Blog.

I've been using icon fonts for a few projects lately instead of graphical icons.

There are several advantages to using icon fonts.

Scale them with CSS

Color them with CSS

Add shadows with CSS

Change opacity with CSS

Rotate with CSS

Basically make any changes without opening Photoshop and editing a sprite

They automatically scale for retina displays

See for yourself. Chris Coyier put together a fantastic tool help you see how awesome icon fonts are .

Inspired by 37 Signals loading bar (pictured above) and making good use of Chris Coyier's tutorial on CSS3 Progress Bars I set to work designing a bar in Photoshop and then replicating it in CSS3.

View demo here

CSS and Markup

Here is the source code if you want to try it yourself. <style> /* Set the container for the bar */ .bar { height:20px; width:200px; padding:10px; margin:200px auto 0; background-color:rgba(0,0,0,.1); -webkit-border-radius:25px; …
