Garbage Collection I got most of my information from a book by Dr. Joel Fuhrman , a doctor who's guided very large numbers of different patients through fasts. The book explains that fasting longer than 3 or 4 days triggers a protein-sparing process, which geeks can understand as a garbage collector .

During the first few days of a fast, the body will burn muscle for glucose, causing muscle loss, but after those few days, the metabolism switches to a different …

…insightful suggestions on getting that last one percent in performance by adjusting JVM and Garbage Collection properties. Meanwhile the talk Diagnosising Performance Issues in Cloud-Based Java Applications explained the problems with running an application in the cloud and then suggested New Relic as a performance tool for cloud applications. I was glad to hear our name mentioned!

This year's event was the largest and best attended since Oracle acquired Sun in 2010. It was …

It's HighScalability Time:

42 Billion : Netflix API Requests /Month

Quotable quotes:

@ commonlisp : Ideas from the talk: In Haskell laziness + thunks + garbage collection ( GC) impede multicore scalability. Parallel GC is crucial.

@ Bulldozer0 : Global state is the enemy of scalability; not only in software, but in governance.

If you've ever, as I have, felt the terror of a misplaced " rm -rf /", you'll …

Why You Should Be Excited About Garbage Collection in Ruby 2.0

Could it be Pat Shaughnessy again? Yes, sirree. Here he digs into the 'bitmap marking' garbage collection algorithm that promises to reduce Ruby's memory consumption in Ruby 2.0.

Using MiniTest::Spec With Rails

Ken Collins has been working on minitest-spec-rails, a gem that makes it reasonably trivial to use MiniTest::Spec (part of the Ruby 1.9 stdlib) with Rails. Learn how …

RubyConf 2011 - Complex Ruby concepts dummified by Matt Aimonetti

Programming languages, such as Ruby, are natural and elegant. But to achieve this elegance, things have to happen under the hood. Garbage Collection, concurrency, Global Interpreter Lock, metaprogramming, C extensions are just some of the things happening with or without our knowledge. Trying to understand these concepts, their implementations and their implications in daily coding might seem daunting. However, …

Garbage Collection

One of the exciting things I had heard about Lion was that it would be improving the recently added garbage collection in Objective-C. As I read the garbage collection section of the Ars Technica report, which comes right after the section on security which got me all excited, my excitement started to fade a bit.

As Siracusa explains it, the Objective-C "garbage collector", which is really called " Automatic Reference Counting…

Object allocation / Garbage Collection

Duke: I recently read that Twitter was spending 20% of its request cycles in the GC , am I the only finding that concerning?

Me: Most people don't realize how the GC works and what it means to allocate objects since Ruby does that automatically. But at the same time, most of these people don't really see the affect of the Garbage Collection since they don't have that much traffic or they scale in ways that just skips …
