This past weekend Rubyists from all over descended upon Kansas City (my hometown and new place of residence) for the Ruby Midwest conference. Headlined with keynotes from Chris Wanstrath (of GitHub fame) and Yehuda Katz (of Merb and now Rails fame), more than 150 Rubyists attended the single-track conference at the UMKC campus. Intridea was represented by four members, one talk, and by sponsoring a Kansas City Barbecue dinner for the first night of the conference.

"Because of the craziness of what I was doing, Merb was much more appealing to me than Rails" @ wycats # RubyMidwest

Building the Merb Server (never finished) pushed him hard into areas he didn't understand and made him much better @ wycats # RubyMidwest

RT: @ tswicegood "If you're gonna do something open-source, pick something hard." /via @ wycats # rubymidwest

Good advice. Hard to work up the nerve to follow it but good none-the-less.

…the Chef Server requires RubyGems due to the plugin feature utilized by Merb.

Resource Provider Packages

The Chef packages do not install the following packages for resource providers. The following packages may be desirable for using the providers. These can be installed via a package resource in a Chef cookbook recipe before using the resource.

git-core - git provider of the "scm" resource.

subversion - svn provider of the "scm" resource.

…support Ruby 1.9. On the server side, we've updated Chef to run on Merb 1.1.x, which was the last dependency we were waiting on for 1.9 support. On the client side, we've found and fixed a tricky issue with mixlib-config where Ruby 1.9 clients were incorrectly using default values for some configuration parameters. If you're running chef-client on Ruby 1.9, be sure to update your mixlib-config to pick up this bug fix. We've already got a few eager adopters running on …

Rails 3 in Action!

Yes, I am writing the Rails 3 in Action book that was originally called " Merb in Action" before the Merb+Rails merger. I was approached to join the team to be a co-author with Yehuda Katz at the beginning of April and the process with him & Manning has so far been wonderful! I've been writing the book from scratch since the end of April and so far I have five-and-a-half chapters written with the sixth one ( Authentication & Authorization) probably finishing up this weekend.

The competition between Rails and Merb turned into a constant confrontation, splitting the Ruby community into two camps. A resolution was later achieved by merging the two teams and focusing our energy on Rails 3. This is how I became a part of the Activism team with Gregg and Ryan . In this new role I was given the opportunity to meet lots of different people from various backgrounds and different communities. I really had a lot of fun.

However, things have changed …
