I attended Geoffrey Moore's talk at the Business of Software conference last year . What he said really stuck with me, and changed the way I think about what we do.

We have a handful of competitor's doing a similar thing. For a couple of years we watched them closely and tried to keep up with them in terms of features. It felt like there were things we "had" to have, in order to be comparable. That was wrong. What Moore discusses is being competitive by innovation, …

…WF, you might want to think of them as distant cousins of workflows). As the practical upshot of Moore's Law has shifted from "doubling in speed about every couple of years" to "doubling in cores about every couple of years" and shows no sign of shifting back, functional programming and what it offers to parallel programming are becoming increasingly important. So don't pass by this video thinking that it'll never apply to you - there's a chance it might. …

…MIT Technology Review . Quite an honor.

The motivation for the talk is a familiar one: it's a dark period for computer programming and if we don't learn how to write parallel programs the children of Moore's law will destroy us all. We have more and more processors, yet we are stuck on figuring out how the average programmer can exploit them. The BOOM solution is the Bloom language which is based on Dedalus:

Moore's law is a wonderful thing.

Users of cloud computing frequently talk about its advantages; those include lower capital expenditures, programmable infrastructure, and the power of agile deployment. One thing that doesn't get as much attention though, is how the advantages of Moore's law are significantly magnified by using the cloud. After all, while buying infrastructure might lock you into using the same equipment for the next few years, using a cloud service means that …

…you to determine how expensive the hash function will be. Because of this, bcrypt can keep up with Moore's law. As computers get faster you can increase the work factor and the hash will get slower.

How much slower is bcrypt than, say, MD5 ? Depends on the work factor. Using a work factor of 12, bcrypt hashes the password yaaa in about 0.3 seconds on my laptop. MD5 , on the other hand, takes less than a microsecond.

So we're talking about 5 or so orders of magnitude . …

…issue of going with a multi-process solution in software. The debate started with the realization that Moore's Law died a while ago. Tomorrow (as we see it now) is destined for multi-cores.

A problem of massive proportions now faces software engineers, since hardware engineers changed the rules on us. Now I am not giving hardware engineers a hard time, I am simply pointing out that there has been a massive shift in the way hardware is built, which directly affects the performance and …

One of the truest trends in the industry has been Moore's Law - it has held true for the last 40 years - computing power is still doubling every 18 months or so. Differently put, computing power prices are still dropping non-linearly after four decades. Incidentally price of storage has also been falling non-linearly. The only major component which does not obey this law is bandwidth where price falls seem to be linear. I have outlined the hardware trends in a couple of earlier
