There have been thousands of reported security vulnerabilities in 2013 alone, often with language that leaves it unclear if you're affected. Heroku's job is to ensure you can focus on building your functionality, as part of that we take responsibility for the security of your app as much as we're able. On Friday, November 22nd a security vulnerability was disclosed in Ruby (MRI): CVE-2013-4164 . Our team moved quickly to identify the risk to anyone using the Heroku platform and push out a fix.

Richard from Dynamic50 has just released a ruby gem for the Police API available here: https://github.com/hookercookerman/oldbill . It allows you to hook into the new Police API service to find out about crime in your local area.

To get started, simply register for an API key here: http://policeapi2.rkh.co.uk/api/docs/signup/ and then add the gem to your Gemfile: gem "oldbill"

or you can just install it from the command line: gem install oldbill

Nearly everything I thought I knew about American politics was wrong.

A few years ago, I read The Creative Class , by Richard Florida , which documents how artists, programmers, writers, and others who create wealth are clustering in specific cities and fleeing others. Florida's excellent book also documents how this population shift results in greater wealth for cities favored by the creative class, and economic fail for the cities they abandon; and how this creative class typically favors liberal politics.
