37signals from Twitter, and then prioritized based on known keywords: links to SvN posts and Jobs Board postings are less likely to need an immediate response, so we filtered accordingly.

Using these keywords, we were able to correctly prioritize about 60% of tweets, but that still left a big chunk mixed in with those that did need an immediate reply: for every tweet that needed an immediate reply, there were still three other tweets mixed in to the stream to be handled.

I thought …

…for open source Ruby projects. Lucky you! In Dr Nic's time it was all SVN, uphill both ways.

If your target project has a web site, it will probably link to the official GitHub repository. Failing that, you can search GitHub for the name of the project. This may also turn up other people's forks of the project — if you're not sure which one is the original, just pick one and follow the "forked from" links.

OK, I'm pragmatic and realize that that approach doesn't work all the time, but it's a good ideal to shoot for. I considered discussing cases where it would be OK to refactor something in the middle of another change, but on second thought I think I'll leave that be for now. You'll learn that for yourself better than by following someone else's advice …

Many developers are convinced that their language, tool or library is the best. They think that C is better than Pascal, Python is better Ruby, and Git is much better than SVN. Among the editors, some prefer VIM over Emacs, while others only like Textmate or JEdit. The preference for certain languages, tools and frameworks can be very subjective, some like this tool, some like that, while others prefer something completely different. Often you like the tool you are used to, because …

Announcing the Github Nginx mirror

These days a lot of people have switched from Subversion to Git. When you've worked with Git for a while, Subversion probably feels archaic and unproductive. The "killer app" for Git is Github , which provides an unbeatable collaboration …

There are many miracles that Git performs for source code versioning and I would like to highlight a recent one that really made my day. Pathfinder did a project for client that also has a team of in house developers. But they use SVN, not Git. Since the development was happening on our side, Git was used to version the project. And since the client is a big organization, having them change their versioning policy was not likely to happen. At the end of the project came a time for the client …
