Times have changed. Storage is cheap, very cheap. Time Machine — Apple's backup software — taught me to stop worrying about efficiency. Backing up everything not only makes backing up a mindless and trivial task, it also makes me feel safe. I don't have to worry about losing my data anymore. I don't have to worry that my backup rules missed an important file.

Backing up desktops and laptops is easy and cheap enough. A 2 TB harddisk costs only $ 100.

What about servers? …

Time Machine backups are handled by a 2TB Western Digital MyBook connected via Firewire 800. It's fairly quiet is one of the few external drives I've found that doesn't have a horrific design. Last year I had the 1TB version, but it finally met its demise after years of faithful service. It was a no brainer to upgrade to the new one.

I am a completely paperless office thanks to my Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 . I usually scan all my receipts, bills and invoices …

Time Machine —I like to see that it's doing stuff when I have my backup drive connected at the office.

Backblaze - While I primarily rely on Time Machine for my backups, I also subscribe to Backblaze to offload the contents of my hard drive to the Internet.

Billings - Now that I am back full-time at Second Gear I am doing contracting in addition to my own product development. Billings allows me to keep track of time in my active projects, manage clients and distribute invoices.

…you can come back to Lion if something is broken, I would suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your internal hard drive to an external one. (Once the upgrade is done, I would still recommend you set up Time Machine.)

ROAR!!!

Finally, your developer machine has been upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion. I hope you'll enjoy the new features as much I do. Happy coding!

…boot drive I rebooted my iMac and then designated the internal SATA drive to be the Time Machine backup drive. At 1TB capacity, it's giving me more than enough room to store both a significant Time Machine history as well as my iTunes library files on it 3 .

Given the Time Machine backups I kept my setup on the default stripe-set configuration, giving me the full 240GB of SSD capacity.

At this point, applications launch with a single "bounce" in the Dock

…automatically create off-site backups with tools like Backblaze or on-site with Time Machine. (See Evernote's knowledge base for details.)

You can easily share individual notebooks with co-workers or spouses.

Most of this would, of course, also be possible with a less locked-in and more filesystem-bound approach like Dropbox, implementing your own document archival and naming process as well as relying on Spotlight for indexing. Do whatever suits your workflow …

Time Machine may quite possibly be the worst backup software I have used in the past 20 years. And that includes things that backed up to QIC40 tape.

The external 1TB drive holds Time Machine backups. In my experience, Time Machine isn't 100% reliable, but I don't need to recover accidentally deleted files often so it's worth filling otherwise-unused space with its work.

Servers at Amazon S3 hold yet another backup of my most critical files via Jungle Disk . This is my "in case of house fire" backup.

I use Dropbox to mirror code and documents across the desktop and the laptop. It works …
