Matt Wensing from Stormpulse (disclaimer: I'm an investor, long story below) generously took some time off of managing the nation's severe weather risks to appear on our podcast. ( Keith Perhac couldn't be with us when we taped this, as he was celebrating the birth of his second daughter.) It's been about six months since our last episode but I think this probably makes up for it, as it's a cracker of an episode.

Nathan : Yep. That's right. There was one key thing or habit that I formed that made that really, really easy to do, and that came from Chris Guillebeau. He writes a bunch of books and has a popular blog and stuff, but he kept telling me the idea of writing 1,000 words a day, basically the idea of making slow, consistent progress on whatever you're trying to do. I built up a habit of writing 1,000 words a day, and that's how I actually finished my first book. I tried to write …

…spends even 30 seconds glancing at that executive summary he'll say " Crikey. Yep, you do." I particularly liked the recognition that most remediation of Heartbleed would be done by businesses, which is probably why the writer focused on "business critical documents" rather than the more anodyne "data." Data gets weighed by the gigabyte but business critical documents spur immediate action when threatened.

Rails 4.1.0: Spring, Variants, Enums, Mailer previews, secrets.yml - Yep, it's released. More than the particular features, I most like the smooth upgrade from 4.0 and the new determination to put out regular, solid releases.

Superhero.js - Resources for maintaining a large Javascript codebase.

RegExr 2.0 - Online tool for working with regular expressions.

…45 million users and 5 billion check-ins. And with all those users and check-ins? Yep, you got it—a ton of valuable data.

From the places you and your friends have checked in, the recommendations or "tips" that you've left, to the popularity rankings of a particular place during the time of day or season, Foursquare has leveraged this diverse set of data to build a new version of the app that senses when you walk in or out of a particular neighborhood or location and pushes …

Rails application.

The Rails View: Create a Beautiful and Maintainable User Experience - Really? A whole book about views? But it's from PragProg, which is usually a pretty good indicator of quality.

RiakCS - Cloud storage from Riak with Amazon S3 API compatibility.

Agile is a Sham - Yep.

Yep. I thought about taking over a podcast, or borrowing the brand from that podcast to podcast on some of these topics myself. I have mixed feelings about the podcast. I'd like to do it but not if there's no audience for it.

If you think you'd like to listen to me talk about freelancing topics, or business topics, as experienced by a ruby/rails/iphone consultant turning entrepreneur let me know. This series on Finding Work and Getting Clients will be a taste of the types …

Quick, what's wrong with this Rails migration? add_column :users, :admin, :boolean

Yep - it can be null. Your Boolean column is supposed to be only true or false . But now you're in the madness of three-state Booleans: it can be true , false , or NULL .

Why to avoid NULL in Boolean columns

Boolean logic breaks down when dealing with NULLs. This StackOverflow answer answer goes into detail. For example:

true AND NULL is NULL (not false )

true AND NULL OR false is NULL
