1. Your Coworker

It's happened to me over and over: I'll spend hours trying to track down a problem. In frustration, I'll ask a coworker to look at the code and frequently they will point out the problem in seconds. It's called situational blindness and it means that you will often overlook the bug right in front of your eyes because you've looked at it so much, your mind has started to ignore it.

Your coworker has another valuable trait: they are different than you. …

…makes plenty of sense. Shifthub was founded by my old Tucows coworker James Woods (not the actor / Peter Griffin stalker ) and Jeremy Potvin, who chatted with TechCrunch ‘s East Coast Editor (and my homeboy) John Biggs in the video below:

The guys at Maluuba describe it as a "do engine" that understands what you say in order to help you get things done. It takes your natural conversations and converts them into queries that …

…wasn't until a couple of days ago when I got the "fully mobile payment experience". My coworker Edward and I were at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival and took a pedicab — a bicycle-powered cab that can take two passengers — when we realized we were both short cash.

"No problem," said "Cajun", our driver. "I got Square." When we got to our destination, he took his iPhone out of his pocket, stuck the Square dongle into …

In starting a new JavaScript plugin, my coworker ( Enrico Rubboli) and I began by looking at various design patterns to determine what would best suite our needs. After a bit of research we decided to go with the self executing module pattern. For example we have something like this (edited for brevity): var Journal = [...]

RMU related responsibilities, about half of that time is spent interacting with students. My coworker Jordan Byron spends at least two days a week working on RMU , building out our web application for course management, and my wife Jia spends several hours each week dealing with administrative tasks.

I'll write more about what goes into running RMU soon, but for now, there is a pledgie open that is meant to bridge us over until we get a proper non-profit organization with a …

Recently, my coworker Jason and I encountered this problem when working on the open source app GNITE. GNITE requires an internal large tree structure that can support up to 5 million nodes. Neither of us had worked with trees that large before, and we didn't know what the stumbling blocks were going to be. So, we decided to spike it out.

A spike is a quickly written, untested piece of code that's intended to be thrown away. You intentionally abandon your best practices in …

Here's a gem I stole from my coworker Joe: vmap D y'>p

When you're in visual mode (that is, you have text selected), hitting D will duplicate whatever's selected directly below. This really comes in handy when you're writing tests.

I use rails.vim, but there are a couple of other commands I wish it contained. Here are two that I added: " Edit routes command! Rroutes :Redit config/routes.rb command! RTroutes :RTedit config/routes.rb

" Edit factories …

My coworker David Underwood , Developer Advocate, will be giving the Mo' Money, Less Problems with ActiveMerchant presentation on Friday, March 2nd from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.. Here's the abstract:

Your Ruby/Rails application is up and running, you've got users, and better still, they're ready to pay to for the fruits of your genius. Okay, genius: how do they pay? The answer is ActiveMerchant , the de facto standard for handling payments …

…beta right now, but you can request a username in advance and you'll be notified when it's ready to launch. It's a cool-looking HTML5 app, and I can hardly wait to give my coworker Ruth Morton a " Mom Jeans" star.

You have downloaded the release version of IE9, haven't you?
